Put the frame together

The four bars press into each other on a tongue-and-groove joint — no glue, no tools.

Stretch the canvas

Lay the canvas painted side down, then place the frame on top with the crossbar facing up. Staple from the middle of each side outwards, alternating between opposite sides.

Hang it

Leave extra canvas to wrap around the edges and onto the back of the frame, where the staples go. That is about 5 cm on every side. On the short side, 100 cm covers the 90 cm frame with exactly that much to spare. On the long side there is more left over, so you trim the painting down to 130 cm — and the two of you decide which crop ends up on the wall.

No, and that's deliberate. The frame has to stay adjustable: the wedges in the corners push it apart by a fraction of a millimeter once the canvas slackens over time. Glue would lock the corner and take that away for good. The frame is held together by the tension of the canvas and by the tongue-and-groove joint.

They're tension held in reserve. They ship loose, in a bag, and you don't tap them in on day one — only if the canvas becomes slack after a few months. Then gently, a millimeter at a time, evenly across all eight. Tap them in on day one and the reserve is gone before you ever need it.

Everything is in the kit — the staple gun with staples, the wedges and the hangers. Nothing to buy on the side and nothing to borrow.

A stretched canvas pulls the longer bars inwards. Over 120 cm a thin profile bows by roughly a centimeter — you see it as a waist in the middle of the painting and as slack corners. One crossbar brings that down to a fraction of a millimeter.

By courier — the bars are 120 cm and no parcel locker takes them. They travel in a telescopic box, where the wood lies straight and doesn't bend on the way.
